Why Feldenkrais?
Moving With Awareness: An Introduction to the Feldenkrais Method®
In our fast-paced world, movement often becomes automatic. We walk, sit, work, and exercise without much thought about how we move. Over time, these unconscious habits can lead to discomfort, stiffness, or even injury. The Feldenkrais Method® offers a gentle, powerful way to reconnect with your body and discover new possibilities for movement, comfort, and ease.
What is the Feldenkrais Method®?
The Feldenkrais Method® is a somatic (body-based) practice developed by Dr Moshe Feldenkrais, an engineer, physicist, and judo expert. It is not an exercise program or a treatment, but an educational system that uses movement and awareness to improve human functioning. The central idea is that by paying close attention to how we move, we can rewire old patterns and discover more efficient, comfortable, and flexible ways of being.
How It Works
There are two main approaches in Feldenkrais:
1. Awareness Through Movement® (ATM)
These are group classes where a teacher verbally guides you through gentle, often unusual movement sequences. Instead of striving or “getting it right,” the focus is on curiosity, exploration, and noticing differences.
2. Functional Integration® (FI)
These are one-on-one sessions where the practitioner uses gentle touch and movement to guide your body. Unlike massage or chiropractic, the goal isn’t to ‘fix’ you, but to help you sense yourself more clearly, encouraging the brains neuroplastic ability to reorganize your movement patterns to those that are more efficient.
Who Can Benefit?
The Feldenkrais Method® is for anyone who wants to move with greater ease and reduce unnecessary strain. For every day life or professional performance. People come to it for many reasons, including:
Chronic pain or tension
Chronic pain or tension
Recovery from injury
Neurological conditions (such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy)
Performance enhancement for musicians, dancers, artists and athletes
Everyday well-being and stress reduction
Why It’s Different
What sets Feldenkrais apart is its gentleness and its focus on learning, not fixing. Instead of pushing harder or stretching further, you learn to sense small differences, release effort, and discover new possibilities. Many people report feeling taller, lighter, calmer, and more coordinated after a lesson.
A Simple Exploration You Can Try Now
Here’s a short taste of Feldenkrais you can do at your desk:
Sit comfortably and slowly turn your head to the right, just as far as is easy. Notice how far you go, and how it feels.
Come back to the centre. Now, without straining, imagine turning your head to the right several times, as if you were actually moving.
Finally, gently turn your head again. Many people notice they can turn further, more easily, simply by imagining.
This simple experiment shows how much movement depends not only on muscles and joints, but also on awareness and the nervous system.
